Question via Facebook : What gets your creativity juices flowing?

Answer : It’s really hard to know or pinpoint one thing in particular that might spark an idea (dreams, a walk outside, a painting, a song) so many of my ideas come from the combination of experiences and living that make me. However, for creative work time I set aside time each day. If I am feeling good and motivated I’ll go over my word or time goal, and that’s great. However, it’d be unreasonable to assume I can always get the juices going. In these instances I either, A., stop and take a break for a day and read a book, or B., set a timer for 30 minutes and whatever I can do in those 30 minutes is more than I had 30 minutes before.

But sometimes you just don’t want to work, and I’m a firm believer is listening to your inner sloth. It’s OK to take a break.

  1. I agree with the idea of taking breaks and not forcing things. I have recently tried switching to visual arts when the words aren’t coming with some success but sometimes you just need to not create sometimes!

    1. Sometimes you definitely have to shake things up, mentally and creatively. I also just take a long, quiet walk alone to help clear everything out.
